The Green Roof Organisation GRO was officially launched on 6th June 2020 to coincide with the inaugural World Green Roof Day. GRO was founded in 2009 as a Special Interest Group, but has now become a full Trade Association and not-for-profit legal entity in the UK.
GRO has appointed a 12-person board which includes James Beattie, Pritchard & Pritchard’s director of operations, with Radmat’s Mark Harris as chairman. The board’s first goal is to release the new version of the GRO Code, which contains the guidelines for the installation and maintenance of living roofs in the UK.
World Green Roof Day (WGRD) was created to celebrate all types of living roofs (green roofs, brown roofs and blue roofs) worldwide and publicise the wide-ranging benefits of living roofs. WGRD takes place every year on 6th June.
“The living roof business in the UK has been growing fast since 2000. The business has been crying out for a strong trade body and robust guidelines for installation and maintenance of living roofs. That is why Pritchard & Pritchard is a proud member of GRO and we are honoured to be a member of the board,” explains James Beattie, director of operations, Pritchard & Pritchard, and member of the GRO board.
“P&P would now like to see a trade body with stringent guidelines for the green wall business. We need to act now,” Beattie adds.

The first World Green Roof Day (WGRD), held 6th June 2020 has been hailed as a big success with projects from over 57 countries being shared on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The campaign has highlighted the skill and talent across the flourishing living roof business.
“World Green Roof Day is an excellent initiative. P&P has supported WGRD by sharing some examples of our living roof and living wall case studies, under the hashtag #WGRD on Twitter and Instagram,” comments P&P’s James Beattie.
“The next step is for the industry to come together to create a World Green Wall Day to celebrate living walls.”
