Green roofs with a BOOST!

Biosolar living roofs combine the benefits of plants with the benefits of clean energy.

In an increasingly urbanized world, utilizing roof space for both biodiversity-boosting plants and clean energy provision is a perfect solution to helping to reach net zero and meeting planning regulations.

It is estimated that 70% of the World’s Population Will Live in Cities by 2030, While 60% of Urban Settlements Remain to be Built (UN-Habitat, World Cities Report).  With this in mind, horizontal space becomes more limited with the pressure to build more, looking up to the roof tops to incorporate plants and deliver clean energy is a logical and responsible solution for climate, people and biodiversity.

What are biosolar roofs?

Combining the technology of solar energy and green roofs, this living roof type is the environmentally logical and responsible solution to roofing.

Architects and specifiers are cleverly integrating a mix of roofing applications to new environmentally friendly buildings which incorporate bio solar and intensive roof gardens for amenity space, combined also with ‘blue roofing’ capacity to manage water efficiently.

Wimbledon Grounds installed by Pritchard and Pritchard is a fantastic example of this combined approach to environmentally friendly rooftops which not only deliver energy, but also space to enjoy rooftop living away from the hustle and bustle of the roads below.

How do we install biosolar roofs?

Solar frames are raised above the green roof layer at an angled to enable the solar panels to produce optimum energy and also ensure that there is space for the green roof to thrive. Space around the panels and the vegetation is essential for optimal efficiency.

The solar panels, once installed at the end of the process need to be at least 20cm above the green layer so that the plant growth assists rather than inhibits the efficiency of the panels.

We work with several manufacturers of biosolar roofing systems and have the in-house expertise to deliver excellent results.

Installing bio solar roofs

What are the Benefits of incorporating solar panels and green roofs?

  • Clean free energy, high up on a roof top.
  • Biodiversity for birds, bugs and bees and a richer urban flora.
  • Evapotranspiration to mitigate the Urban Heat Island Effect.
  • A ‘Blue Roof’ layer to capture storm water and mitigate flooding.
  • For specifiers bio-solar roofs offer a double benefit in the race to net zero.  Clean Energy and the biodiversity boosting benefits of plants in urban areas.
  • Plants help solar panels to perform more efficiently.
  • The green roof layer of a bio-solar roof provides insulation to a building helping to keep it warm in winter and cooler in the summer, reducing energy bills.
