If you are considering specifying a vertical garden, what do you need to know about the benefits, the installation and the ongoing maintenance to ensure your wall looks good all year round?

The benefits of green walls for domestic or commercial clients are the same:

*A beautiful aesthetic

*Air quality boosting benefits – plants improve air quality by trapping particulate matter.

*Acoustic improvement –  planted walls absorb noise, boosting a calmer more tranquil environment

*Green Walls support biodiversity – providing nesting habitats for birds and food for pollinators

*Vertical Gardens keep cities cool – living walls reduce localised air temperature – causing a cooling effect in the summer and thereby reducing the urban heat island effect in cities.

*Green walls also insulate buildings when retrospectively fitted, bringing substantial energy efficiency in both summer and winter.

*Commercial clients can use living walls as part of communicating their sustainability targets and to deliver healthier working environments for staff and customers.

What should you expect the installation process to be?

Dependant on the system you select for your project the installation will vary slightly.  All green walls require a water supply to enable sufficient irrigation.

Interior installations can be supplied with freestanding, closed circuit water tanks or can be fitted to the mains as long as correct run off and drainage is incorporated into the design.

After a consultation a design and planting plan for your wall will be created, taking into account location and orientation to ensure that the horticultural content selected thrives.

Some planted walls are grown in a greenhouse and installed in sections, others are erected and planted in situ with large plants for instant impact or smaller plants if a customer would like to track the growing process.

All living walls when planted correctly can deliver significant benefits to both interior and exterior locations.

How do you maintain a green wall?

Maintenance is crucial for vertical gardens to thrive – just like any other ‘garden’ – irrigation is key to success along-with plant selection.

Typical commercial maintenance processes will see visits to the wall twice monthly with seasonal visits for outdoor walls in April and October.  Plant health,  irrigation functionality and nutrient levels should be checked at each and every visit.

Urban Living brings with it demands on space, making living walls the perfect solution for smaller town gardens or roof terraces – transforming walls and fences to vertical gardens.  Internally vertical gardens bring nature in, especially when your home has no outdoor space – bringing the powerful benefits of plants into the heart of the space.

Pritchard and Pritchard work directly with home-owners, facilities managers, living wall suppliers, construction companies, landscape architects and architects to install and maintain living walls to be proud of.
