This could all change, however; a flagship development of 596 homes in the Meadowbank area of Edinburgh is strongly considering incorporating living roofs as a major feature of the scheme. Furthermore, leaders of Edinburgh Council are considering whether they could encourage green roofs to become the norm at residential developments throughout Scotland.
Whilst green roofs in Scotland do exist, they are generally to be found in office complexes, but Edinburgh Council have an ambitious target to make the city net zero carbon by 2030, and the use of living roofs as part of green housebuilding is progressively being seen as a potentially effective contribution.
