Green Roofs and Building Energy Performance: What the Research Really Shows

Green roofs are often discussed in terms of biodiversity, planning compliance, or stormwater management. But increasingly, research is demonstrating that they are also a credible passive energy strategy, particularly for the UK’s ageing building stock.

The Core Principle: Managing Heat Flow Through the Roof

At a fundamental level, green roofs affect building performance in two ways:

  • Direct thermal insulation – adding mass and resistance to heat transfer
  • Evapotranspiration cooling – reducing surface temperatures and heat gain

Research shows that green roofs significantly reduce heat transmission compared to conventional roofs due to their lower surface temperatures and moisture processes.

This combination means they act as a dynamic thermal buffer, moderating extremes rather than simply insulating.

Green roofs offer a passive, low-energy response to all three challenges.

They are not a silver bullet, but they are a proven, evidence-backed intervention that improves building performance while delivering wider environmental value.
