Rooftop gardens, install and build, Carolyn House, Croydon, London

Carolyn House is a stunning £32.5m refurbishment and extension of a 1960s office block into a 23-story retail and residential block.

Prichard & Prichard were brought in to build roof-top gardens on the 17^th, 21^st and 23^rd floors for the enjoyment of the residents of the 183 apartments.

The installation across the three roofs has a combined area of 737m², including paving, green roofs, planters, benches, bar and an outdoor cinema screen.

    Stage 1: On 737m2 insulation and waterproof membrane, were laid 444m2 of Marshalls paving on adjustable pedestals
    The hard paving was broken up with a 25m2 area of hardwearing Millboard decking and areas of soft-underfoot Easigrass (artificial turf) totalling 115m2.
    Stage 2: Construction/installation of planters, including five large bespoke wooden raised beds, totalling 30m2, built from railway sleepers; and seven aluminium powder-coated planters, totalling 20m2.
    Stage 3: Construction of 11 bespoke benches made from railway sleepers and decking; and installing beautiful cedar cladding all around the perimeter of the roofs.
    Stage 4: Installation of 120m2 of sedum green roof on the top of three rooftop buildings.
    Stage 5: Planting of raised beds and planters with drought-tolerant hardy plants including Dwarf Mountain Pine, Jerusalem sage, Rosemary, Salvia, Perovskia, Grasses, Chamomile and Oregano.
    Stage 6: Construction of outdoor slate-top bar with sink and amenities and installation of 7.5m2 outdoor cinema screen.
