Brown, ecology-friendly roof, Southampton
- A brown roof is an environmentally-friendly roof that recreates the ‘brown field’ site that existed before the building was constructed. It is left to self-seed via wind or bird, with plants and self-populate with wildlife that was displaced by the build.
- Prichard & Prichard was brought in to install the brown roofing system, which includes:
- Waterproofing and root barrier
- Insulation layer
- The drainage board / water retention layer
- The substrate / growing medium
- Irrigation system
- In accordance with the ecology plan, P&P installed a mix of substrates, pebbles, logs and mounds.
- The expectation is that the roof will colonise with local flora, which will benefit bees and other animals.
- The expectation is that the roof will become home to local invertebrates, spiders, beetles and, perhaps, ground nesting birds.
Planning for biodiversity
The image shows logs left to decay – which could become home to stag beetles – and mounds which can offer invertebrates shelter in extreme weather.
